I took this photo in the Galapagos in 2004. It was very early morning . I always liked the photo but just wasn't happy with the final photo post processing....and I have worked it several times. I know the techs are weak and my shadows don't have alot of detail....but If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate hearing them. All comments welcome!

Hi Bob, the Galapagos is a fascinating world, i was there for just over two weeks in 2008.

Not sure why you went for f/16, shooting wider would have helped the SS giving you a sharper image. The main point for me is the horizon line running/cutting through the head. Not a huge amount you could do, going slightly higher might have helped, but may not give you the POV you wanted, also would prefer to see the position slightly more to the left avoiding being too central. The Beachmaster looks over sharpened as there is a sharpening halo around the seal itself. You concealed the boat well, using the island in the BG ;) May wish to remove the black spec far left, near the skyline and slightly rotate the image CW to straight it. BTW the larva rock was treacherous, slipping on it from wet landings is not ideal!!!

Hi Bob Excellent comments by Steve !!

Composition wise would have been great if you could have place the seal on the left side of the Island and avoid the horizon form running through his head as noted !! You did well with the exposure obtain good shadow detail Tried a few things in PS to enhance but difficult working from the jpeg.

Moved image to LR and used the gradient tool and masking tool, then over to PS for Nik Reflector effects.

Thanks everyone for sharing your comments!
Al.... I like your repost and am trying my best to duplicate.....the Nik reflector effects look so nice and the sand is greatly improved...but I am not sure what you did here.

Bob, have you done any PS work on the sky in the OP? I noticed there was a slight halo around the rocks in the BG and around the nose of the seal, lighter areas. Do you know what it is as Al's repost has highlighted it even more?

    Thanks

Hi Steve...thanks for commenting! I think the halos are probably some very sloppy dodging! I will definetely have to go back to the original and start over on this one!

Thanks Bob, apologies in the rather basic way to indicate/illustrate my point, but it seemed the only way. Appreciate the update and hope you can update your image without too much of a problem. Thought it was my eyes!!!:)

    cheers

Steve, Al I reworked this photo...take a look if you would and let me know if its any better. I ran some NR, sharpened and used Nik Reflector effects. I really like this photo and would like to make it better. The halo was in the original ....although not quite as bad.. I do not know what it is...I tried to tone it down some!

I think Bob there original just isn't cutting it and as you say, with halos embedded in there it might be worth just to move on and park this one, however if you want to keep working then fine, but would suggest you rotate 0.67 degrees CW to straighten the horizon too.
