I have been in a slump for a few weeks here and cant figure out why. so i had some theories and thought i would go out to green cay this afternoon and test them. it was late in the afternoon and the light was great. (one of my theories). i set out to practice on my focus points. (another of my theories) but i tried to work on all the other things you guys stress here also (head & light angle, etc).

am i getting close here? this grebe was nice enough to give me a few shots before swimming out a little too far to photograph.

processed with capture nx, established B&W points, a fairly heavy crop and a round of sharpening.

thanks for looking and i appreciate your comments.

    Nikon D300, Sigma 50-500 at 500mm, f/8, 1/400s, -1.3EV, ISO 200, no flash, on the tripod today!!

HI Harold !!!! You are getting close Lots of good things here Image sharp with a good head angle Eye sharp then beak has to be since its in the same plane Waited for good light and made a good exposure

Composition wise would not try to include the reflection since it is not defined Wold like seeing more room up top (cropping bottom) Not sure how the light is hitting the grebe since the back is dark and head tail well lit Was there a shadow on the bird? Would have liked to have the head clear of the green up top

The overall feel is very good since you got the good exposure in good light Getting there !!!! btw great tech info and use of the tripod !!!!! Could have used a higher ISO The 400 ss is at the ragged edge of trouble !!!

Very nice work, Harold! I love the light and head angle here, along with the fine water ripples. I agree that the bird reflection adds very little and that a better composition might be with much more room up top. It's great that you are out there experimenting with such fine attention to the entire photography process!

    Hi Harold
    Great exposure and timing.
I see there is a bit of green in the background so after you get your first fine shots could be worth waiting for bird to have a more contasting BG.
