Image made by Michelle Zimmerman from the veranda of a cabin at Ndutu, N Tanzania while I provided an alternative reason for the sign.

More seriously, early that same morning, my own flash images from the same vantage point revealed numerous eyes glowing in the background -- mostly zebras and wildebeest, but.... During the previous night large hooved animals came careening and loudly bawling through the narrow space between the cabins. Verrrry impressive, lending credence to the warning signs.

Cute image Craig. We were in Ndutu a few years ago and loved it. Do they still have the cats in the rafters of the dinning room?

    Hi Ed,

I was there in Dec 2008, and the genet "cats" were indeed still ruling the rafters, as they apparently have been for decades. They live in the space between the inner and outer roof structures of the dining hall, and live on insects and other invading critters. Beautiful animals, they are only somewhat related to cats, and belong to a different family of old world carnivores, Viverridae, that also includes civets and linsangs. There are several species of genets; the ones at Ndutu appeared to be the Common Genet.

Ndutu was one of my favorite venues -- a nicely restored facility (the current owners found it in near ruins and brought it back to life several years ago). The staff was incredibly welcoming and gracious, and meals that were positively mouth-watering.
