Default Coyote hunting in Yellowstone NP 2009

I shot this Coyote hunting on my last day in the park. He was on the far northwest corner if the park. I never saw wolves in the park (I heard them and I got to meet the wolf biologist) and I only got within a mile of a pack of 9 wolves when I was in the Tetons. Even with 800mm I couldn't get a decent shot (didn't expect to either. No matter what lens you use, you still have to get close to get a great image). At this point I was still trying to figure the 800mm f5.6 out so settings were not optimal

Nice alert pose. Looks a bit contrasty to me. Crop wise I think you could a bit from the top. Hope you had a good time in the park (I always do). Wolves are always hit or miss, I have been fortunate several times with them but you are never close enough ;). Was the biologist you met Rick McIntire? If so he is an interesting sort, but quite knowledgeable. TFS

Here's a different crop. I'm not sure what "contrasty" means but I started over from scratch (Raw to JPG) on this one. Yep, Rick McIntire. He's not a great conversationalist but he knows his wolves :)

sorry I disagree with Todd, original post is amazing,..love the space around the subject, BKG really compliments the coyotes colours..I might just sharpen a wee bit..

    love it well done

Hi Michael, I am not so worried about the comp, more the processing, as for me it looks more illustrative rather than a photographic image, sorry? It appears to have 'blocked' colours together, giving very little detail & definition, hence my comment about being illustrative.

Steve- Are you talking about the BG or over all? I'm not seeing the blocked colors in the coyote or foreground grass. Looking at the original at 200% I think I see what is bugging you. It must have been windy when I shot the image. There's a lot of motion blur in the grass and weeds in the background (but not foreground???). I need to look through the other images and see if they are any better. Thanks for the input.

I also think there is something not quite right with this image. Looks as it it were a super large crop as my monitor is not showing any fine detail in the fur or grass. The BG is distracting and I would consider cropping the top off down about 20%

Nope. Not a tight crop. In the original, on the Eizo and the big Mac screen the Coyote has detail as does the foreground grass. I don't know... maybe the transition from big TIF to JPG massacred the file?
