    Default Willet"s parting glance

Willet's have recently returned to SE Idaho. I like the subtle colors. I'm not certain what to do with the bottom of the image. Does the absence of feet relegate this to this to the trash bin. D200, Nikkor 200-400mm, spot metering, f5.6, 1/250 sec., iso 320, cropped to approx. 15% of the original.

Now that is an extreme crop! I like the lighting and eye contact, creamy background too! It's hard to crop that much and have a lot of detail though.

Will there be more to come of these guys?

hi Gary - the massive crop is hurting the IQ. The feet are secondary in this case for me - The image quality and lack of sharpness and fine detail courtesy of the crop would make this one a record shot for me.
    Keep em coming.

Hi Gary, Agree with Lance regarding the overall quality due to the massive crop.

You should also leave room for the virtual feet....even if they are not there leave room for them. Would also run NR on the background. I like the head position a lot.

Hi Gary Love the pose and bg plus great low angle !! Did have a good exposure but not sure about the spot metering?

These birds will allow you to get close if you take it easy and keep low Just try to work yourself closer and closer, make images along the way and keep the best at the end !!! Crop wise we normally like having about 80% of the frame filled with the bird and good point by Bill regarding the virtual feet. Include then leave a little more room as if they were there !!!

Thanks to all for critiques and comments. Will get closer next time. May use 1.4 teleconverter if sufficient light. According to Nikon the autofocus of the nikkor 200-400mm lens does not work with the 1.7 or 2.0. Thinking of purchasing a 500mm. According to nikon, the autofocus with the 1.7 & 2.0 does not work with this lens either. I'm new to the use of teleconverters. Any comments on this issue would be appreciated.

Hi Gary I had a 200-400 and will work with the 1.7 and 2.0 The AF slows particularly with the 2.0 .. down to a crawl !! Posted some examples way back which shows it can be sharp !!

The 500 is one sweet lens and you would like it a lot !!!

it is a shame this is a big crop because i would really like this if there were a little more room below and i dont usually like close ups like this.

Nice pose and low angle. These birds have some interesting patterns in their feathers.
