    Default Limpkin

    Manual Metering
    Camera: Nikon D3S
    Exposure: 0.002 sec (1/640)
    Aperture: f/4.0
    Focal Length: 400 mm
    ISO Speed: 200
    Exposure Bias: 0 EV
    Flash: No Flash

Saw this limpkin at the lake when I was on my way to photography the owl. Turned out this bird gave me the only shot that day.
He/She was looking at me, watching what I was doing. I got down low and took this shot. I like the eye contact, the way the body turn to show most of the shiny feathers, and the lifting of the left leg.

As always, comments and critiques are greatly appreciated.

    Hi Troy,

I like this image and agree with your self critique. The head angled slightly towards us and the raised foot makes this pose pleasing. I also like the low angle of capture. I think the having the bird in the light and while the background is shaded is effective is helping separate the bird from the background.

I am thinking that perhaps darkening the top portion of the background to even out the shade might help enhance the lighting effect and help make the bird standout even more. I also like the thin strip of out-of-focus foreground a the bottom but, found myself wondering how darkening this a little would affect the presentation. I also thinking that selectively sharpening the head, lightening the eye, and darkening the bill some might be worth the effort. To show you what I am thinking please see the attached image. The changes are subtle. I'll leave it up to you if they effective or not.

Nicely capture and thanks for sharing.

Very nicely done. I don't think I would change a thing except a little more sharpening. I would be happy with only getting one shot if it looks that good! Nice techs too!

Phil, I could see why you like it. It does make the bird pop even more.
One personal preference that I have is that I hate dark BG against any subjects. I know darker makes it a bit less distracting.
I certainly would do a bit more darkening and sharpening. Thank you for the suggestions.

I like the head and neck angled back toward you. I wish only for a more uniform BKGR both in terms of light and tones.

Thank you. The light from the darker BG was blocked by a tree.
It could have been better, I agree. Only had the chance to take this shot.
