I like this image and agree with your self critique. The head angled slightly towards us and the raised foot makes this pose pleasing. I also like the low angle of capture. I think the having the bird in the light and while the background is shaded is effective is helping separate the bird from the background.
I am thinking that perhaps darkening the top portion of the background to even out the shade might help enhance the lighting effect and help make the bird standout even more. I also like the thin strip of out-of-focus foreground a the bottom but, found myself wondering how darkening this a little would affect the presentation. I also thinking that selectively sharpening the head, lightening the eye, and darkening the bill some might be worth the effort. To show you what I am thinking please see the attached image. The changes are subtle. I'll leave it up to you if they effective or not.
