Default Snowy Owl in Flight (not baited)

Thanks to my friend Karl Egressy for the info on this birds location, i saw it out in a farm field, on a old fence post... when I was ready yo head out there for a few frames, it decided to fly directly at me!!

You can imagine how I felt... but, to short of a lens, and poor angle, so I watched it fly over a busy highway, and land on a chimney in the back of someones workshop... with nobody home, I carefully work my way into the back yard, and in position for the lift off... this bird has no fear it would seem, and I stood there, in deep snow, no boots, and waited... took a few frames for the record, and finally an hour later it lifted, and flew to my left.

Shaking and shivering, I was lucky to have enough light and a decent ss to catch a few frames. this is the second shot, as the first one her talons were still touching the chimney, and I clipped the wing tips as they were straight up.

take care, and thanks for looking.

Great image, Ray, the soft light adds a lot to it. Love the hint of claws under the wing :)

Great light and eye contact. The talons add to it. Do you have another frame showing the underside of both wings?

Nice and it is a bit different than the usual snowy post. I like the wing posture, it reminds me of a hockey player skating across the ice swinging the arms & stick. The light is awesome.

Don't get yourself shot for trespassing ;)

thanks so much Axel.. I did get a few more frames, the one previous to this one was the lift off, and the talons are still touching the chimney., and I clipped the tips of the wings., but the rest of them are in my "recent photos" gallery on my website.. and I will post at least one more in here... it was quite a thrill to get these shots, my best snowy images to date.

    take good care.

really nice shot Ray , love the light ,,, nice to see one that's not baited as our owl here in our area has been baited so much apparently he's landing within a few feet of people now ,,, :-(

    Hi Raymond!

Great job! With his wing cover and talons showing, it reminds me of Zorro's cape & sword! The lighting is very pleasing!

    Your patience sure paid of.
I really like the composition and that you can see the claws.
The light improves the overall feel.

    /Andreas
