    Default Chestnut-Mandibled Toucan on Nest

Greetings everyone from Costa Rica! My workshop is coming to a close, and I thought I'd share an image from this morning. This is a beautiful Toucan sitting on a nest near the Arenal Volcano. We never saw its mate, but this bird spent quite a bit of time looking at our group. We were a considerable distance from the bird, but one of the workshop participants had an 800mm lens with a 1.4x and graciously allowed others to use the combination. The OOF green at the bottom of the image is an OOF foreground tree. I removed a small leaf above the bird's head and a small portion of a leaf below its mandible. This is most of full frame. I'll be home tomorrow. Pura Vida! :)

Great shot Doug. Wish I was there.
Too bad the lower corner wasn't cleaner.

What a striking bird! That nest looks so cozy. I'm really liking the mood in this image.

Wonderful image Doug! I don't mind the fact that the image is a bit obscured by the greenery. Like Sidharth said, it looks cozy and makes the mood just right. I too wish I was there....

Definitely has that "cloud forest" look and feel.
I'm not sure the blurred space and brown branches on left side add to the image

Here's a quick edit to remove them and tighten the crop. With CS5 it should be really easy to remove the branches

Should i ask why you used the 7D at f8 - - was it manual focus - - why not the Mk4?

Definitely a keeper - thanks for sharing

Doug, I love the image and the artistic look to it. I prefer the OP. The way the bird is coming out of the hole is priceless. Very nice image.

I have a number of images with the Mark IV. I was going for maximum 'reach' with the 7D shots (800mm + 1.4x on a 1.6 crop body). I had to use Live View with manual focus.

    Pura Vida Doug!
Man I love this image! the profile given by the toucan is excellent. I prefer your version with the inflorescence of the bromeliad and I don't mind the OOF vegetation, after all, you were at a rain forest!

I can imagine how wonderful this image would have been with out OOF foreground Doug. Excellent comp and details considering shooting conditions.

I like the dreamy look and I love the image. So regal. No AF with the 7D/1.4X TC/800 f/5.6 combo. I much prefer the original COMP to the repost. (Sorry Peter :)) For most folks this would have been an ideal situation to use Live Mode to get the camera to autofocus accurately as described in detail in my 7D User's Guide:

There is a trick that you can use to get that combo to AF accurately with Live View....

Like the colors in this one. I like the OOF FG, gives the impression of looking through mist.

Doug, looks great. Even though we were able to get some cleaner looks, I prefer this with the OOF greenery as it adds that dreamy look. And for me the bromeliad inflorescences are what make the picture. Well done!

I chose to post this version because I liked the dreamy feel. I've got versions from different angles that are clean at the bottom. I'll get around to posting one of them soon. Thanks for all the feedback! We had an incredible photographic adventure!
