Good looking bird Jonathan, exposure looks good showing good detail in the shadows, might just darken the white strip down the middle !! For these birds shaking and splashing I like lowering the shutter speed so the water won't look frozen ... do run the danger or movement ... would try after nailing a few with the higher speed !!!

Would also try having a little more room up front so it does not look as centered and less from the top for proportion !!

    Jonathan:

Good advice from Alfred. I would be tempted to do a curves adjustment to pull down some the brighter areas.
Might I also suggest another round of sharpening, esp. in the head and eye.

    Really neat birds!

    Cheers

Good timing and behaviour, and I like the water action...but I must admit that although the pose is natural I find that I'm wanting to see more wing. The face looks soft, and I would apply some NR to the BG (noise seems OK farther away from the bird itself...perhaps you did run NR, but not close enough to the subject?). Some of the lightest whites on the body look hot, as previously mentioned.

Cool behavior. With the bird angling away from you a bit the near-flank is sharper than the head. Some selective sharpening of the head would help.

That is a very good point - I hadn't thought of that. Thanks.
