This is my first post in the galleries..I have been lurking for a while and decide to take the plunge. I am new to photography and only been doing it for 6 months. My love is Wildlife in all its forms. I have been a member of a photographic website in South Africa and find that I no longer get honest critiques as I have become part of the furniture, and I am wanting to take my photography to the next level. And I have seen that on this forum, that is what you get...Honest critique.

I am still a bit unsure on the PP and sizing for this forum. So this will be test run for me to see what the images look like here.

a warm welcome Dumay...you are right, here we give honest critiques and we love seeing everyone's varied images captured all over the world.

I like the poses here - where was it taken? It looks like he's sniffing the perfume in her neck :)
The light was beginning to count against you but it's still not too harsh which is good. I think another round of noise reduction on the background will do the image good. It looks tack sharp as presented, with a hot spot in the whites of her bottom jaw becoming apparent (just tone it down slightly).

By the way - always wondered, what does your signature at the bottom of the image say? :o

Hi Dumay Glad you took the plunge, great first (or any other) image !! Impact and feel !!

Agree with Morkel ! The are under the chin might be slightly over but does not bother me much, possible to tame but not easy, those areas turn a strange grayish color when darkening, sort of like lightening deep shadows !!

Might get some comments about the female's head, would have been nice to see the eye with a bit of a turn but the action is so strong is not noticeable Big Congrats on this one !!!

Welcome Dumay, at first glance I liked this image immediately. The tonal range is very nice and the hotspot isn't overwhelming so I probably would agree with Alfred and not do much with it. I also was drawn to the lionness' head and thought how nice it would be to see her eye but don't find it a big issue. I like the background colour tones but would defer to Morkel's suggestion to try the noise reduction on the background … I don't always pick up noise with my old monitor so until I get a new one will have to leave that advice to others. Look forward to seeing some more.

Gorgeous first image, Dumay. I really love the look of their coats (lot of detail) and the background is great. When I look at your image, I can almost smell the beasts which is always a sign of awesome work. I really like this one.

Thanks everyone for the warm comments and welcome. I have redone and desaturated a touch as I felt there was a bit of a red cast. Also tried to sort the hot spot on the mouth. And ran 2 NR on the BG, Didnt seem to do much more.

V nice first image. I lurked off and on at that other RSA website for a year and decide it was a bit too much of a mutual admiration club for what I want/need.

First let me say that if I am incorrect in my understanding of the following, I very much want and welcome correction. And an understanding. From anyone.
So, not to drag you into this, but it seems to me that at BPN we could be having image color profile circumstances that lead you, me and others to be seeing the same image in different colors. To try and be more specific, images can be assigned color profiles such as Adobe RGB (aRGB), sRGB, ProPhoto and am not sure how many others. Fine, but web browsers handle or may not handle these color profiles the same or differently. To be even more specific, you image's color profile is I believe Adobe RGB, aRGB. While some web browsers will recognize aRGB and show it correctly other web browsers do not. Below I have a crop piece of your image shown on left as posted as aRGB and on right as a sRGB profile, With my web browser, Firefox 3.6, I see a significant color difference. Your original has more red in it. Here is that comparison -
    .

    .
Please allow me to emphasize that I am claiming no expertise in this arena, it's simply that I wish to know if true, and if so, how important it is to making our critiques here. What I guess I'm getting around to, by the longest way possible :), is I think images here should be posted with sRGB profiles. Again, I solicit and welcome verification or correction.

And looking forward to more of your photos. Especially African wildlife which is my favorite subject for photography.

    Tom
ps - your above rework was happening as I was putting my reply together, I did not see yours until after I put mine up. Thus most interesting your comment about the red. And FWIW your repost is aRGB profile. This color thing driving me (more) crraaazy!!!

Tom, I used to change my images to sRGB before saving for web and was never happy with my posted result. Now I just let the save for web feature in PS do the work for me and I've been much happier with the final result. Thus I have no answer to your dilemma but acknowledge that it has been raised before as a concern. Someone will know.

Hi Dumay, I thought this was a really good photo, and you were obviously paying attention waiting for this interaction to happen. Although there is no eye contact the picture remains very strong, because of the females bared teeth, and the colour in her mouth. What happened straight after this, did you get any more frames?

Hey Dumay, welcome to the wildlife section. Great subjects to start off with, and love the tender moment. Colour wise, I would go with an inbetween of your two posts. With regards to the sharpening, I feel its on the borderline of oversharpening. If you look below the eye of the male, and right on top of his mane, you see those " crispy bits". Looking forward to more.

Hilary - Would you want to have your image postings appear "right" to you - or to those viewing them? Or both? I want them to look same to me and you so we are talking about the same thing. And I hope as you say an expert here will see my thread in the General forum and reply. Will drop this now as it is off topic.

That is sort of the question for me about it. What is going on here? Is the male nipping the female's neck in prelude to xxx, and she is reacting? But I don't think so, I feel both are just sleepy and ready for a "cat nap". Becoming "flat cats". BTW, I like color in -all- posts!!! (I do see the difference). So what does that mean?

Thanks Grant, not too much actually...a little playfullnes and lots more doing nothing. I do have one of the male yawning and the female looking head on to the left of me and both looking in the same direction. Unfortunately the yawning male is in a portrait crop, but I feel it works better in a pano crop but then there might be too much space on the right...But I will post it and people can tell me they think

Hi Tom Colors look fine to me as presented, don't see a problem here.

For web posting it is better to use sRBG, with CS4 when you save for web will do it for automatically.

Alfred - agree, yes, the colors look fine to me also. For both of Dumays's original and rework. His rework one came up while I was putting together my reply, see ps on it. Anyway, all I was trying to point out was that some members may see different colors depending on their web browser. I think? Right/Wrong?

Hi Dumay, firstly this is a good image that has interest & detail and well handled with the 2x, something that is not renowned for being the best bit of Canon's kit. Happy with the crop & detail but perhaps a slight tweak in curves might just give it a bit more 'pop & depth'.

Just to clarify as I assume Tom means sRGB rather than aRGB.

You have your final file in RGB and want to convert for web use, this is simple as sRGB uses a smaller colour range unlike RGB.

File > Fit image put your size in here eg 800 x 800px (might want to do another, lesser round of USM
Edit > Convert to profile Source space will show RGB destination space should then be changed/show sRGB
Save for web > Optimsie set this to 200k click > save...

    Job done.

    Hope this helps.
    Steve ;)
