    Default Wild dog portrait

Late afternoon after a short but intense thunderstorm the light came out again and this wild dog was posing for a bit.

Lovely expression on the dog's face however I would prefer not to have such a square crop as I don't find it flatters the subject. The muzzle could do with an increase in detail, at least on my monitor, as it appears a little clogged. Very nice highlight in the eye, gives the animal a lovely alert look.

Interesting what Hilary says about square crop, think I would agree. You could therefore crop a bit off of right side. HOWEVER, when I look at its info it is 720x600px, so, cropping off rhs would truly square it up!!!! Oh, well, never mind. :)
Also agree with Hilary other comments. And maybe, perhaps, lighten/increase gamma slightly all of image.

Thanks for the comments. The color as it is now is how I remembered it from the scene.
Could try a less square one though. Will post it later.

This is the full frame shot. Also played a bit with the levels. What do you think? Better?

    Hi Egil

A square crop I always find an awkward format that really never lends itself well. Based on your second post I would suggest you look at a portrait format, giving both space for your subject and offering a more flexible crop. If you need to lighten the image use Highlights/Shadows or Curves as Gamma is certainly not the way to go and you will struggle to achieve what you want. At f/8 there should be more detail in the face, but I think you had the focus point on the front jaw rather than the eye, (easily checked in Canons DPP). Perhaps a little selective sharpening might also help too. Good luck.

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for you comments/tips. I think you're right about the focus point. Not a great star in making selections in PS, so didn't do any selective sharpening.
However, I did play with shadows/highlights and I can see the improvement! Thanks :)

    Hi Egil

I think if you can add a little more in curves & certainly revisit USM. There is more detail in there, you just need to extract it. This i from your web image and I think you will see what I mean. ;)

I would also go for a portrait crop, tight in.

    Hi Steve,

Thanks again, I'll try to free up some time in the weekend (although I don't really have weekends here, I try to take a day off a week) and work on it again. I'll post the result!
