Default canon EF 2x Extender Telephoto

I did a search but would not find. I was wondering if the Canon EF 2x Extender will autofocus on a 100-400L Is it good/bad? Can't aford a longer lens.

Bill, welcome to BPN! What camera do you use? I would probably try a 1.4x first since this would result in f/8 and a 1D body could acquire AF. The AF speed will be slower than the bare lens.

Bill, Both the 1.4x and the 2x teles will lose their autofocus capabilities with the 40D. Not a problem if you're shooting intimate landscapes, you can use the 40D's live view to focus. Big problem if you're shooting birds in flight. I'm happy with the quality of the 1.4x, never tried the 2x.
    Hope that helps.

Then it will not autofocus, xxD bodies can only AF up to f/5.6. You could try if you like the results with a non-reporting TC such as the 'cheaper' Tamron 1.4x TC.

On the B&H site look under the Canon TC of your choice and then look under the features section and there in a link that will give you the compatibility of the TC with various lenses and cameras.

This link should take you most of the way there for the 2X TC.

I was looking on amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00009XVBY/...70830_pe_ar_v3 thought it said it would autofocus on any EOS body. Did I miss read?

Bill, At some point during your research on teleconverters you're bound to run into articles on taping the pins on your tele to overide the camera and force it to autofocus. Just ignore the articles. It's just a waste of time. IMO
    Enjoy.

you ever try it? I did it for quite a while with the 100-400 and 40D and it worked decent, if your trying to track BIF it sort of sucked though

the tamron sp pro 1.4 is what I used, it worked better than the canon one with the tape trick for sure, forget 2x though

Agree with all the above, I would not try 2xTC on 1-400 - IQ would suffer too much IMO.

Jamie, Yeah I tried it. In my case (Canon 1.4x) wouldn't lock focus unless there was a lot of contrast in the scene. Even with contrasty scene I found it much faster to just manually focus using LiveView.
