This is my first success at photographing alligators from my kayak. I've made three trips up this creek trying to get a shot. It is surprising how skittish these apex predators are... at least here in North Carolina. Three trips, about 8 hours of paddling and here's the result. I'm sure I'll spend more time trying to get additional shots.

40D, Bigma @ 500mm, iso 800, f/8.0, 1/500. I did a bit of work in post to brighten the eye as well as selective sharpening of the animal, noise reduction on the background.

hi Bob - Cant work out whether you are brave, Stupid or both - ONLY JOKING!!! :)

Seriously - you are shooting these guys from a kayak - dont they eat kayaks for breakfast??
Like the low shooting angle and the head only being visible - Light looks a little harsh - in the right light this would be spectacular - IMHO.
Still looks a tad soft to my eye's - camera movement possibly??

Hi Bob, the pano crop works very well here along with the subjects placement. The lighting isn't working for you and is a bit harsh. Agree with Lance regarding the softness in the image.

    Hi Bob,

I can't even comment on the photo itself. All I can think of is you in a kayak...it must be part bravery as Lance has asked...not stupidity though...just total insanity!!! :D
