    Default Flashing Blue Heron

    Taken at the Naples Zoo (Florida) with a D300, 200-400 F4 @ 210mm @ F4, 1/800th, ISO 200, handheld.

He was warming up I guess?

I desaturated the background a bit to highlight his colors, which were as interesting as the pose if not moreso. I wish he had feet.

    Comments welcomed.

Its left wing, section in shade of the body. And left side of body. Is iridescent blue. Really? Shaded sun looked like this?

ps - I really don't know, just questioning. Many times shadows go a little blue, but?

Here is the original without the saturation changes. In the editted the orange has been brought out a bit (too much?) but the primary change was to select the background in CS3 and reduce its saturation substantially to bring out the bird and colors.

Maybe I overdid one or the other?

The shaded areas I painted with exposure increase, not a color change, but that did seem to lighten more in the blue when compared to the original. I could then tone that blue down separately?

Lance, As to the crop, I do have more to show there. I id this to put his body in the right third position, leaving the sun direction open. Would you more center it? Or just pull back a bit for more all around keeping the relative space?

Anyway, here is the original colors -- this was an experiment to use saturation to make him stand out more. Sounds like it did not work well?

To my eye the repost looks much better - Not familiar with these guys sO i could be off base - but looks more natural to me. Cropping wise the repost works better for me as well - just the bit more space on the RHS - Just doesnt feel as tight.
Good idea to desat the BG - but something else has gone astray whilst doing it maybe???

Repost gets my vote. This the true color of the GBH. I have seen the Wood Storks pose the same way...thanks Al for explaining this behavior
