Made this image last year.

Would've loved some more room around the bird but still works for me.

f/5.6 1/400 Av mode with ISO-200 on a 50D and 500 + 1.4TC lens

I like the takeoff pose and eye contact and would give it more room. I would have gone to ISO 400 or even higher for a shorter shutter speed.

I totally agree with Axel about the ISO. I agree with your selfcritic about the need for more room ut the image wors for me because of the nice eye contact and the action.
