Look back shots like this certainly can work. You need a good head angle, with the consensus being that parallel is best for look back shots. I think the DOF requirements are a bit more stringent, as our eyes want closer objects to be sharp, so the tail needs to be sharp in my opinion for a look back, while if the bird is head forward, we are more tolerant of a blurry tail, because we know it is further away intuitively.
In this image, I like the drop, colors and exposure. Only thing to add would be a catchlight.
