    Default Let There Be Pink

This past weekend was one of my best photography weekends in a long time especially when it comes to pink birds. My nemesis bird for years, I didn't photography my first spoonbill until my 40th birthday at Wako where a rougue one came by. I really didn't get any decent spoon shots until I went out with James. Every spring I head out to the Tampa Bay area with hopes of catching spoons with Darth Vadar himself. But until this past weekend, my luck with the conditions has been bizarre. My first trip out with James in 2007 yielded some good shots, but that was the weekend of all the fires and our photography was under a cloud of thick smoke.

In 2008, I went and got some decent pics, but we had cold weather, fog and rain. At least we made it back to the docks before the monsoon hit.

In 2009, we had to scratch the trip due to gale force winds. As you can imagine, I've been going bonkers in search of some good spoonbill shots. So this year, we finally got some perfect weather and I have so many killer spoon shots, I'll be processing them for several months.

This is the first spoon shot from Saturday that I was able to process.

    EOS 7d +500 4.0L + 1.4x TCII
    f/8
    1/1000
    ISO 400
    Manual Mode

minor crop to 8x10 dimensions. I added a tad of topaz on the bird to bring bring out some details esp. in the feet since they blended into the background a bit.

Hi Mike: Glad your dream finally came to fruition. You did a good job with this action shot. I love the angle and the water droplets. Your horizon appears a bit off to me

It was nice to meet and shoot wth you this past weekend. Glad it all turned out so well for you!

Likewise. I'm still processing shots, so I'll post some from the boat later on.

Nice head on angle with good wing angles, Mike. The drops of water are a reap plus. Congrats on the fulfillment.

Mike, Great birds, I will be going out with James this week, and hope to add some great keepers to my portfolio. Would like to see a little bit more space on both sides of the bird. Is there a lot of noise on the inside of the wings? Did you desaturate the reds a little?

noise probably from the topaz. I did a NR pass on it; may do another one. the processing was done late last night...

Never process late at night, it never looks the same the next day. (Learned the hard way).
Agree with Marina's and Clemens' suggestions, and I'd try and see how it looks without the blue reflections, just out of curiosity. Glad you had a great time!

Nice shot Michael, I want to get shots like this of the Spoonbills.
My eyes keep going to the bright spots on the bottom of the frame. Perhaps darken it a bit?
