I photographed this Sandhill Crane at dawn at Bosque Del Apache trying to make his was across the frozen pond with my Canon 50D. ISO 1600, f/5.6, 1/200 sec, EF500mm f/4.0L IS USM, Evaluative Metering, Auto Exposure, Auto WB, No Flash. Should have opened up and dropped the ISO to 800, alas..... Comments Welcome.

Hi Richard The image would work fine for me if the head was visible, even going away its fine since he is trying to make it across the pond. Exposure wise remember with the light tones the meter will try to make it grey and stop down on its own .. so more light but not sure why to drop the ISO .. need the shutter speed.

Lots of times we find them stuck to the ice and they have to peck their way out !!!!

No ice here . . . I would suggest pano treatment, Richard.

Hi Richard - different - i dont mind it as presented but a look back would have put it way over the top.
Like the monochromatic feel - Think a Pano crop might work better - or a little CCW rotation - the horizon/ice line in the BG is not straight and makes it feel like its tilted - just cropping that off takes that feel away.
    Good show :)

Hi Richard, Good advice given. For my taste I would crop out the dark area on top.
