    Default Common Bird Project III

At least now through the summer. For my final common bird subject (thanks for the idea), I thought I'd post this windblown Mountain Bluebird. He'd drop down to the ground to grab bugs then fly back up on some perch. Fun part is trying to guess which one. Had to track and focus fast given I was using manual focus and he seemed to be hungry :). 40D, 400DO + stacked 1.4x & 2x TCs, f11, 1/320s, ISO 800, + 1/3 EC, tripod, MLU, cable release, catchlight added, cropped to vertical from horizontal.

I'll take that common any day, Steve.
Lovely colors and compo and great techs, he sure gave you a workout, huh?

At least for a little while :). When I'm hiking through the fields, I watch them going from perch to perch in front and off to the sides of me constantly hopping onto perches and dropping to the ground to catch bugs. As soon as I set up the tripod and focus, they take off to the next perch. After a certain distance, they start working back the other way. The blue flash of their wings really stands out when they're flying.

Are these the same as in Greater Yellowstone? I saw plenty of blue f-16s while chasing wolves back in late Sept.

The blue really stands out against that BG. What a sweet shot. Amazing sharpness considering the stacking of TCs. liked the perch a lot. I would love to shoot this bird some time. Thx for sharing Steve.

Hi Steve, the angled pose works well, and the blue on this guy is exquisite. Glad he chose the top part to perch on, and I like the BG colour too - good compliment with the blue of the bird. Well captured. Im sure you are looking forward to getting out again.

I wish this species were common here, too. :) I like the angle, sharpness and BG and would only tone down the perch a bit.

Could be Fabs. You'd definitely notice them in flight. They do range that far (and further) north. Not sure if/how long they stick around up there though.

Steve beautiful bird that I hope to see on day. Great blue colour that stands out well against the BG.
