I went out this morning to try and create a nice zoom blur with a crane in the wildflowers. Most were failures. I like this one. ALOT. It was created with the handheld Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS lens with the 1.4X II TC and the EOS-1D MIV. ISO 100. Evaluative metering +1 stop: 1/4 sec at f/40 in Tv mode. (Lots of dust spotting required at f/40....) To create a zoom blur I work in Tv mode, usually at 1/4 or 1/5 sec, I use One-Shot AF and zoom from long to short. I take lots of images to try and get the framing that I want.

Artie, It was well worth the effort. The layering of BG colors really adds a lot to this. I also love the placement of the Crane in the frame. It's lovely:)

I love this...how the colors radiate out from the crane and that you can still identify the crane. It's like a starburst of life and color. Exactly what spring is!

Wonderful zoom, Artie - the shutter speed is perfect. The layered landscape colors helped to create a unique and pleasing look. This is a refreshing look to this week's theme. (I'm having a challenge coming up with something!)

Artie, I love this image! The layers of color, the lovely pink flowers, the fact that I can ID the bird, everything about it is just perfect. Wow!

Dumb question alert: I'm guessing that you cropped to get the framing and that's why the center of the zoom is not in the center of the frame, but what I don't get is why the bird is so clear and is not blurry from the zooming. I understand how to keep a subject in focus when panning. As long as you pan with the motion of the subject, then everything else that is not moving that speed will be blurry. But in this case, you are zooming, so it would seem that everything would be blurry.

I guess I need to get out and try it, huh?

In any case, this is a beautiful image.
