Artie, loved the composition. Your 'placement of bird in frame' is always very good and I learn a lot from your photos. For some reason, I struggle a lot with that. Thx.

I liked the details in the reds a lot. The dark feathers have come out nice and soft too.

I came seriously close to not clicking on the thumbnail, out of sheer jealousy of having never seen or photographed this species. I guess we do have our Scarlet Tanagers over here though, so I can't be too jealous.

Excellent shot Artie, your exposure control looks excellent, and your reds are vibrant but far from blown. I love the perch as well. Great job portraying this fantastic species. Is the angle a bit steep?

The bird was high and low. I have some lower but loved the singing pose here. At least when it was high the effective 1500+ mm (about 30X) helped reduce the angle of elevation :)

Just beautiful !!!! These are such beautiful birds and I remember seeing them in the Pantanal but never got very close to one. I love the simple composition and perfect pose. Wonderful BG and the soft grey of the BG really makes for a stunning backdrop. Love this one Artie !!

What a nice creation, Artie. Vibrant reds, warm browns, singing pose gives it pizzazz.

Hi Artie Beautiful shot as usual...but you have me confused. Read a short blub from Scott Linstead (Outdoor Photography Canada ) He is commenting on shooting brilliant red subjects and how tricky they are to expose for (easly over exposed) recomends a -2/3 ev and brighten later if shooting raw. Alfred Forns has cretiqued a red wing black bird and suggests lowering the red channel a bit. Your reds in this shot are super with 1 2/3 over ev staighten me out please. :)

Hi Don, Welcome to the party and thanks a ton for your membership support. I am glad that you like the image. There are many errors and misconceptions in your short post above. I will try to set you straight :)

There really are no tricky digital exposures. Simply expose to the right.... With subjects with bright reds or yellows or when photographing at sunset, be sure to use the RGB histogram. With really rich colors at sunset you may have to blow the red channel to avoid producing an image that is overall much too dark but not to worry: there are some great tutorials in the Educational Resources Forum. One is called REDucation. Be sure to check out the part about adding CYAN to the RED channel. :)

Suggesting any compensation without know the lighting conditions and the camera being used and about 10 other factors is not the way to go. I met Scott just recently; he is a good photographer. Maybe you mis-quoted him. I would suggest that you get a copy of ABP II (916 pages on CD only) and study "Exposure Simplified." And if you wish to master exposure theory get a copy of ABP and study the chapter on Exposure.

You can find the two books here: https://store.birdsasart.com/shop/ca....aspx?catid=32 Be sure to check out the discount on the combo.

Good plan and thanks. With digital you folks have it E-A-S-Y as compared to exposure with film!

Beautiful image of a stiking bird, Artie.
I like this singing position, when the ruffled feathers on the throat and the slightly open beak indicate it, opposed to a fully open beak. It is prettier.

Kind of reminds me of Julie Kenward's Northern Cardinal image Artie. I really like how the brilliant red bird totally contrasts with the drab BG. Love the slightly open beak and the perfect head turn. Reds are nicely controlled. An excellent image!
