Default I Love the Bosque: for David Cramer

There's nothing quite like sunrise at the Crane Pools! Here's a Ross's Goose saying goodbye to me as it flew out one cold morning. This image is a tribute to my friend and fellow BPNer David Cramer who, like me, loved the Bosque. He passed away quite unexpectedly last week.

Beautiful image! Awesome light and exposure control, great BG, pose and the open beak is a real bonus. I feel the bird is a bit too close to the right.

Doug, It's a beautiful image and tribute. The BG colors are terrific. Very nice pose and sharp details. The lighting looks great. David will be missed very much.

Hi Doug, good angle of flight, and I like the extended wings. Well exposed, and good to see the open beak. The goose is separated from the BG so well.

Great tribute, Doug. I see you're still putting that 7D to very good use.

How did you determine what your exposure should be in manual? I've used different methods, approximations from metering on the sky then compensating....etc. I was wondering if you get it spot on the first time, or have to make minor adjustments using an estimate as a starting point.

I was shocked when I heard about Davids passing and still am to be honest.

Whenever I get there or look at my Bosque images, I know he'll be there.

Hi Colin. I normally meter off of the greenish brown grass at the Bosque using evaluative metering. That gets me close. Then I take a sample frame of a goose and adjust my exposure using blinkies as a guide. I like a few blinkies in my RAW files. Since geese fly as the sun is rising, I'm constantly changing my exposure to deal with steadily increasing light.
