    Default King Parrot

Taken at Grants Picnic Ground in Victoria :) Were lots and lots of cockatoos so a bit hard to find the king parrots hiding in the trees!
f/5, iso 1600, 1/400. Bit of curves and sharpening for pp :)

like the details and eye contact, BG mildly distracting. Image is noisy and needs NR .TFS

A very nice picture. I would have increased depth of field and I agree with Arash that the image has noise. The eye contact captures the viewer and I like that tremendously.

Love the eye contact and the fine feather details. Agree about more DOF would be nice and run NR on part of the image. Wondering about the histogram, does the image look a bit under?

I agree with the other that I think the eye contact is good and the image is sharp where is counts. More depth of field (DOF) would be nice but from you settings you obviously did not have much light to work with. s presented the image does look a little under exposed. If flash/fill-flash was a possibility you might have been able to step down to gain more DOF and brightened the bird. A I was curious what a little effort in photoshop would yield so I tried the following:
    1. selectively lightened the bird with a curve layer and mask
    2. brought out some of the details in the shadows of the bird with Shadow/highlight layer
    3. Toned down the background and ran noise reduction on it.

Just suggestion based on personal taste.

    Thanks for sharing.

Of course its always easy to critique other people. I look at my picture collection (over 50,000) and not a single one is perfect. In fact all of them are flawed. I find that the more I study photography, the more disappointed I am with my previous work. That is why I like this forum so much. It has taught me how to lessen the flaws in my pictures.

aside from the work that phil did with the image, i would crop some off the right side. be sure to post your exposure compensation so others can help out with the tech side too. i'd imagine this was probably at 0EV and should have been ~+1.0, give or take a third.

Must have been a full frame shot because your DOF looks narrow. Techs mentioned, but the pose and the eye contact are very nice.

Hi Jane - good advice above - Phil's repost is good - would crop some of the negative space from the RHS.
Looking forward to seeing more :)

I agree with adding more light on the initial exposure (looks a bit undersxposed). Please mention, was it AV, Manual or TV and any EV. This will help review the settings in more detail. DoF, is a issues here, on hand we want to blur the BG so need a wide aperture which provides more shutter speed. On the other, so close to the subject a narrow aperture might have added more DoF, not sure. I like it wide open in this case, another stop in aperture would put you at a shutter of 1/200 given this ISO - too slow IMO. Like the post production by Phil. Essentially, he added the light and this looks good but it will add noise.
