This was taken a couple morning ago. 50D, 500mm +1.4 Tc, 1/250, f/8, iso 400, EC+2/3. I cropped a bit and removed two branches from the bg. I also toned down just about everything I could and may have left it a bit dark.

Dave, difficult subjects to capture. I admire you golks who manage heavy gear to capture these little active birds. Liked the sharpness a lot. It would have been much better if the perch was not coming towards you. head angle of course...but these little guys are so hard to capture.

Dave, good angle, and interesting red marking on the head - thus the name. Comp wise, I would maybe take a bit off the top and bottom.

Would agree on the difficulty of capturing this species; nothing but energy. Two things that I might suggest. I might have done a quick mask on the white flowers and dons some selective tone adjustments with a combination of "dodge and burn" and some "curves adjustments" and then blended the two layers; 2) Would have selected the BG and created a layer. Apply some gausian blur to soften the branch in the image ( in the BG) even more. Might have gone a little easy on the sharpening on the bird. Good over-all image. ;)

Here is a pretty quck shot at some changes.
I cropped a bit from top and more from bottom and some from right.
I shortened the perch and tried a little lighter version. I also reduced the sharpening a tad.

It offers some improvement, but may be a bit tight now as well as a little ham fisted on some of the removals.
