From yesterday's outing, a Lesser Yellow Legs. 40D, Bigma @ 500mm, iso 400, 1/1000, f/8.0, ev +.33. RAW conversion via CS3, seletive sharpeng and noise reduction in Photoshop. Also a selective tweak of bird only using Shadows/Highlights. Image was taken around 11:30 AM, eg harsh light and high sun.

Hi Bob I like the pose and pretty bg, very appealing and a great head angle. Did well with the light but not sure about the positive compensation? Since whites were mostly shaded they don't look bad at all !!

Not sure if you were hand holding? but the image could be a little sharper A couple of suggestions are shooting wide open and increasing your ISO a bit more !! .... at 500 mm with the crop factor you have an 800 mm lens !!!

Crop wise might take a little from the bottom .. got a keeper !!!!

Hi Bob, Agree with Al's good points. No reason to go + ev in this situation. For my taste I would take some off the top.

Hand holding... in a kayak... had been shooting a Snowy Egret just before turning to shoot this guy, hence the + comp.

I think your image had an very interesting "other-world" look to it. And, of course, Alfred nailed all the important techs, as he usually does.

I agree, I like the vertical crop and the BG is awsome. Maybe a little off the top.

Hi - AL nailed it entirely. My tastes would take some from the top also.
    Good show :)

Very nice image. I like the vertical crop as you've done it. I would love to see more detail of the bird, so my personal preferences with shorebirds are for a horizontal crop, with less on top than this vertical crop.

Hi Bob...the background really is beautiful and sets this image apart. I agree taking a bit off the top might be a good idea.

Thanks for the comments. I found the nearly universal call for "more off the top" interesting. So interesting I went back and ran a demo photoshop filter I have called "Power Retouche." It allows you to apply various compositional overlay's on an image. (As a demo the image must be less than 400 x 300, hence the small size). I was curious to see how my placement would relate to compositional guidlelines like "thirds," the "golden spiral," and the classical "golden sections." Below is the image with the "golden sections" overlay on it. Using the third's overlay the position would suggest that it needs more off of the... wait for it... top. ;)

With that rather stout, slightly upturned bill me thinks you have a greater yellowlegs.
