    Default Boat Billed Heron

I'm definitely not a bird photographer, i just shoot 'em when I run across 'em. It's especially nice to find species that don't live anywhere near me, such as these two.

    F8, 1/500, ISO400, Nikon 70-300 VR @ 300mm.

    Hello Jay,
This is a very characterful pair - quite the bad hair day :D
I love that they look as if they are staring intently at the same thing. I do find the BG a litle distracting, but realise that there is nothing that you could do about this. Sharpness and feather detail looks very good.
    Best,
    Nicki

Hi - cool looking birds - had not seen these guys before - agree with Nicki's critique.
Does look sharp and HA is not too bad - like the eye contact.
    Techs look OK.

Hi Jay Big Warm Welcome ..... where do these guy live?

Made a good image, well exposed and sharp. Might have shot wide open to minimize the bg !! Do like it a lot !!!

Hi Jay....Agree with Al to use a larger aperture to blur bg a bit...but very interesting birds....I too would like to know where you found these guys and their ID

Thanks for looking everybody, I appreciate the comments and especially the tips. Totally agree about the busy bg not being optimal but there were seven of these birds in the same area and all of them were in this same type of tree. They weren't inclined to move either so this was what I had to work with. Next time I'll try to get the depth of field as shallow as possible.

The photo was taken in Belize, south central part of the country, in the jungle, about 15 miles inland. We were actually looking for a Morelet's Crocodile known to be in the area (the cheery looking fellow below) and the herons were in the trees surrounding his pond. A local guide at the trailhead helped me with the ID and a quick google search confirmed it. I have some other shots where the birds look ok but it's hard to make them stand out from the bg. If I can improve them a little I'll put them up.
