While at Anhinga Trail yesterday afternoon, I spotted a photographer on the trail still shooting the old fashion way...

Other than Clyde, I don't think I've seen anyone bring one of these to the Glades in a long long time especially to photograph birds.

Hi Mike I was only aware of one person doing birds with that rig many years ago !!!

There are some scanning back you can place of some of those 8X10 for amazing quality. With the faster scanners is becoming more practical since exposures are shorter .... a relative term !!!

..btw when I used my large format down here my biggest problem was heat, looking at the ground glass under the cloth was brutal with head/humidity.

one pic at a time too. the good thing is these guys usually get their shot through mere patience.

I would have expected a Field Camera; this I would think would be better geared for the studio

Did you go talk to him and perhaps ask to see his photos?

I recently attended a landscape photography workshop and 2 of the participants were former large format landscape shooters currently using DSLRS. Upon arriving on a location they both would walk around and spend a lot of time surveying a new scene prior to setting up their camera and shooting. They would set up their shots, take a few pictures and pack up. In the meantime I would have taken 200 images from every position possible. They would make fun of me telling me things like "you missed a weed next to the gray rock"...They certainly had some gorgeous images and I really learned from them to slow down, think more about the scene and the light before I shoot. They said they learned from me that they were missing a lot of good stuff on some of the scenes. I cannot imagine shooting birds/wildlife with these cameras...but I am sure there would be a lot to learn from this guy...interesting to talk to anyway...
