Could not quite work myself into the position I wanted for this - these little guys were on a rock on the side of the stream with very limited access.

    Comments welcome.

Very nicely detailed and exposed shot Lance. I can never decide on the DOF in this type of shot, sometimes I think it would be better if the lens was stopped down to bring all three in to focus while at other times I would opt for the slightly OOF birds to be more OOF if that make sense. Maybe your in between option is best.

Great detail on the front duck, great lighting and a fantastic pose.
I am not crazy about the rear duck, a little to oof? A crop to just behind the rear duck's eye makes the front duck pop out more.

Not sure about the most OOF one but I think the comp works well with three. Maybe a tad tight but I like it. Love the expression of the main subject (sweet & innocent) - that puts it over the top for me.

You were trying for the OOF Lance, because you obviously could have stopped down but I don't you would have even gotten them all in focus regardless of f-stop. I like this look personally and think you got lemonade out of lemons:)

Spot on about the DOF Jackie - not possible to get the three in focus no matter what - with this focal length and distance from the subject - stopping down would not have helped at all. As you get closer with a telephoto lens you DOF decreases. There are many DOF calculators on the net - worth having a play around with and you will see what I mean - Distance to subject was about 15 feet.

i like the pattern all three of them make. and the soft light makes this image even better. all i could wish for is that both rear birds be in the same focal plane to have similar blurs. but that's too picky i think. i like it! definitely has a high cuteness factor!!!!!

I have my share of challenges with DOF, but I like how it works in this shot. We know they are all essentially identical, the front duckling is in sharp focus and the loss in detail towards the back works for me in this warm, quiet, sleepy scene.

Love the composition and in MHO I like the effect the out of focus gives your capture, leads you to the center one.
