like the pose, HA and BG, but the image is soft and lacks detail, shadows are a bit silent too. I would brighten the shadows and redo the sharpening.

    Hi Dale

Good looking bird with a clean bg !!! Good head angle and pose Did not see the exposure compensation for this one but seems a little under exposed? Might want to check the histogram ... might also have something to do with the light angle, the front of the bird is lit but the side of neck/head a bit dark !! Best to get in sun angle before making the image. Rather loose it than take it too early !!!

When you use the 100-400 with extender do use it on a tripod, will give best chances. The combo is capable of being sharp, you did not do bad here at all but could be sharper !!! ... effective magnification is 680 !!!! If a tripod is not available then crank up the ISO (its very clean) and get to 1/2500 to have a good chance then take multiples !!!

Besides lightening the dark areas and removing a slight cast you can work on the eye, will make big difference, its the first thing we look at !! Will re post below just a change in the eye, simple lightening ... select and lighten !! Did nothing else and I think improves it !! Looking forward to the next one !!!

... there is something wrong with the color spaces on my side, the cast is on my re post not your image :)

AL nailed it completely :) Light angle is the main thing for me.
Small dust bunny RHS - 1/3RD way up from bottom.
