Nice image! We will be down there next Saturday, can not wait...but will have to. I am wondering if the whites on the neck are a little hot. What did the histogram look like? TFS.
Tough contrast situation and you did well with the exposure, might have gone with a 1/3 less light. The overall image has a good feel !! ... btw flash wise it had zero effect on your bird, at the chosen shutter speed your output art full was about 1/8 power !!! When using flash remember the sync speed or just over !!
Thks Al, i'm having some trouble getting this flash thing down, i'm thinking.. is this more of a manual flash needed?
Thks Don
Don I don't think flash has any effect over 1/1000 s. That is the fastest the camera can sync to. Manual mode would not have made any difference. Also better to use the Better Beamer as it increases your flash power thre times the normal output.
I'll chime in for head angle. Totally turned away from you.
Nabbed by the HAP :)
Flash usually syncs at 1/250th (Depending on your camera) - you can set High speed sync mode which lets the flash fire at higher shutter speeds - but for every stop of increased shutter speed you loose a stop of flash power. So at high shutter speeds unless you are really really close - zero effect.
Like the overall scene and feel of the image - head turn towards you would have been better.

Hi Don, Great advice given above. My only comment is sometimes backrounds can be lit in such a way as to compete with the center of interest. In this case the lit bush is very bright and takes something away from the bird. I also realize shooting a bird in flight you have no time to evaluate that........
HI Don, See you can get a sharp flight image it just takes practice:) It looks like you already got a ticket from the HAP nothing you can do about that in post processing but you could tone down the BG so it does not compete with the egret for the viewers attention, all I did here is use a brightness layer and a layer mask to apply it only to the BG took less then a minute to do and I think really helps the Egret become the main focus of the image. Again a very subtle change and one you do not want the viewers to notice.

This has a very nice feeling to it, and I like the wing position. Head position noted above. Repost really helps to focus attention on the bird, which is nice and sharp.
Great flight capture Don. All techs covered. Looks like you guys had a good day.
Congrats
Thks All, i agree with the bkg 100%, i'm learning CS4 slowly but surely, i need to learn how to do these masking etc. Don you still up for a photoshop workshop
