Dear oh dear what a magical capture, do you have anything more on RHS as I think this would help with the image balance. Last year I thought that these sort of images were a once in a lifetime, then we had Austins incredible image and now this. I am certain that some clever PP could make this an even more stunning image. Given Morkel's recent performaces then I nominte him to have a go.

    Did the Springbok get away?

glad you're sharing this stunning series here as well Johan! truly an awesome moment and as Ken rightly put one that gives us hope that mere mortals who visit these places once in a while can get as lucky as this. love the dust and sharpness. I thought this would be a great candidate for B&W since there is a lot of motion and the green colours in front tend to distract from the intense action (even if just slightly, it's hard not to look at the action!).

I gave it a shot, hope you don't mind...:)

did a few selective contrast enhancements, converted to B&W and added a vignette - not everyone's cup of tea but I certainly like it...Harshad don't stone me ;)

Nice action Johan. I don't feel all the space on the left is needed. Color version is superior to B&W version.

Superb action. Watching such action is terrific. Photographing it is double the joy. I would go with the colour version here and would simply crop the space from left. Look forward to more from this series.

    Great action Johan,

I agree with the comments above and would lose some from the LHS and keep it in colour.

It is such an experience to witness this in the wild.

    Johan,
Wonderful image. I've seen scenes like this, but way in the distance. I just watched in awe at the speed of the cheetahs. Congratulations at being in the right place at the right time and being able to react and follow such fast action.

I agree with others that the space on the left is not needed. Because the sun is behind the animals, I would select their faces and lighten them so you can see the expressions better.

    Welcome over here now Jumbo!
To capture this on Xmas day, what a great present for yourself to have such a top grade action image!
Agree with above minor nits and another vote for colour version. Was this much of a crop Johan?
A good early candidate for WIOY 2010? Certainly Wildlife IOTW.

Wonderful action ou captured with good detail. I also agree about eliminating the space on the left. Lightening the faces is aslo a good idea.

Excellent image Johan, action, head angles, dust and two cheetahs in one. WOW! I like the original post best.

This is a fantastic image, Johan. The expression on the face of the springbok, and it's pose, and concentration and braking of the cheetah on the left are just the stuff of dreams. Agree you should crop from the left and center those two faces. Also, if it doesn't damage the picture too much, apart from lightening those two faces, maybe try to darken the rest of the picture. Maybe even crop a little off the bottom.

I did a hatchet job just for fun, and there are better ways to do the same with the original file. Apologies for ruining a fabulous shot (especially for the pink, which should be the colour of the other dust :( ) but on the off chance it is helpful to you, here it is, without bottom crop....

great action, well done! we all would love a chance to capture a kill....

agree colour best option and I would use a square crop to loose space on LHS ,which would make for more powerful image...

    WELL DONE

Big congrats, what a wonderful photo, excellent. If possible I would put the action in the center of the frame. Excellent!!!

Glad that I found this after seeing the tighter image above. Color works for me. Obviously spectacular as presented. Stronger with more of a pano crop from below. (The foreground only takes away from the rest of the image; it adds nothing.) For me, it needs the room on the left (though keeping it follows no rules or guidelines that I can think of....) Lastly, a bit more on the top would be great with the crop from below.

Thanks Johan, Above is my best crop. Having the complete cloud of dust above improves this ALOT for me. I ran a 4 pixel Gaussian blur on the upper BKGR.

Do you know what focusing mode you were in and what sensor(s) was/were active?
