Default Really Right Stuff BH-55 ballhead, review

Evening all, not had much time to do any photography apart from a brief trip to Holland. However, I just finished doing a review of the BH-55 ballhead from Really Right Stuff which I thought may be of some use to potential ballhead shoppers out there...!

I also love mine. However, I must admit that I don't use the drag adjustment setting too much. I either just use the main knob to tighten and losen or the ball is tightened with the pan lose with a side kick.

    Great review.

One question for us that would consider using this ballhead with a Wimberley Sidekick, is the panning tension adjustable and how smooth is the panning action with the ballhead locked?

I'm using the Arca-Swiss Z1, which does not provide for adjustability of the panning action. It's slightly stiffer than I'd prefer, but still quite smooth and useable; however, if this function is adjustable on another ballhead, then I might consider switching.

David, hope it's not too late for the reply (so sorry, never saw it at the time).

Panning tension is adjustable in that as you adjust the locking knob for it it gets harder or easier to pan depending how tight you have turned the knob. It can go from really really easy to turn to fully locked - but there is no 'official' tension adjustment like the main ball has.

    Thanks for the response Richard.

Just for the record, my Arca-Swiss Z1's panning function has loosened up substantially and it's locking nut is now serving the function of a tension adjustment.
