I assumed this hawk was gaining warmth from the roof, but I read somewhere that they spread their wings to get rid of parasites. Does anyone know what this behavior is?

Yes, Julie, he's rising the temperature for the heat to kill the parasites. White birds may not raise enough. But interesting to see the Great Blue White morph do this, apparently he doesn't realize he's white.

Thanks for that info, Fabs. Five years ago, a family of these hawks made my yard their home base. There were 4 juveniles, and it was a lot of fun to watch them. I was sitting in a chair when this bird flew in and stayed on the roof long enough for me to get my camera.:)
