Ouch! You would have to be very careful landing on that perch.
Sharp, nice BG, interesting perch.
I might consider cropping in from the left to eliminate the smaller 'leaf' on the left margin. Just my sense that because the bird is partially blocked, that the mass of cacti tends to overpower the subject. Personal taste of course. That would also decenter the bird a bit.
Sure sounds like you had a productive outing.
Randy
Randy,
Thanks for your time and critic.
objective of the image is show the subject with native flora. IMO cacti has as much importance as quail in this image. Looking through long glass I often forget about environment and compose tight portraits of birds. This is an attempt to over come my tunnel vision compositions.
Lovely light and color. These birds are usually very skittish. With all that shutter speed you could have closed down for more dof with the cactus. I agree with Randy's crop suggestion. Would love to have this one in my portfolio.
Sid..I like the colors, sharpness on the bird and cactus..but agree on tighter crop unless it becomes to grainy.. I agree with David, would love to have this one...TFS
Sid , I liked this image very much as posted , superb settings and lovely BG , terrific bird and equally terrific perch , How I wish this was in my files

Great light and I like the way the quail is perched on the cactus. Like the clean background as well.
I like the comp as presented, but would opt for a slight CCW rotation as it looks like the bird is falling forward slightly? I love the colours and "pop" here Sid.
Hi Sid,
This is just gorgeous and I love it as presented. It is well composed with a lovely balance and your composition is over the top. Great light and detail and a killer BG. Love this image !!!!!!!!
Sid, beautifully done. loved the sharpness and BG. awesome perch too. Excellent crop suggestions above. I'd do both...a little CCW rotation and a crop to cut off the LLC leaf. (a) it will make the entire perch appear sharp (b) it will remove that bright white spot. You will still have plenty of cactus left and it thik it will appear to be vertical as you want.
As-is, excellent as well. Thx for sharing. These birds are gorgeous.
The shadow on the quail's breast....is that from a crest of another quail?
Kaustubh,
Here is a crop as suggested. After the crop I dont think there is enough cactus to balance the subject and create a symmetry.
Sid, I think it is a matter of personal taste. I like the repost more. Its just a little less sharp because of resizing.
I like the original post better. more of the environment. Looks like the Quail is playing peek-a-boo:D
Sid:
Very interesting. As I made the original suggestion about the crop from the left, I was sure that I would prefer the cropped version, but despite accomplishing some things, bird bigger, less centered, I think the original is a stronger image. I am not sure it is a matter of balance, or perhaps the repetition of forms that makes the original more pleasing. Yes, the recrop shows the bird better, but the overall image suffers.
Ah, the joys of composition.
Randy
Kaustabh,
IMO every image should convey a story. As I stated before, intent of this image is to show a gamble's quail on native cactus. My original post tells the intended story much better than the re-post.
IMO with your crop suggestions what your are looking for an image of quail. Not an image of quail on cactus.
If baker offers a chocolate cake, it should be judged as a chocolate cake. Not as a vanilla cake. ;)

Very nice work....
A great shot from one of my favorite spots to shoot, love the comp and the colors of the cactus in this one Sid.
OP is far better than repost , IMHO you killed amazing image in RP:eek:
I prefer the op. Too often most photographers don't see the forest for the trees and some never will. The colors of the cactus really lend to the image. I like how your quail appears to be peeking out observing whats going on.
I notice what appears to be some faint vertical brush marks right of the bird or is it my tired old eyes.
