Trying different ways to photograph these birds and running out of ideas This is a strongly backlit bird Was trying to show the beautiful red under beak At this close distance had to go for the eye ball and no amount of stopping down will render the tip of beak in focus Had to do a little work to get to this point which usually I don't Normally take under two minutes to post one Just wondering if you think this works at all This morning decided not to use a flash Have been trying for more natural effects .... sure wish I had one . I keep going back and forth myself on this one

    Comments welcome and much appreciated

Looks like an Anhinga waiting for a dental exam! :)

I like the way the neck is lit up from the back. That bird let you get pretty close! A different image than what you would normally see of them so that is a plus! The nice clean BG helps too.

    Hey Al,

Interesting light. I would like to see it a little sharper but works for me.

Hi Al, Love the lighting here and the translucent appearence of mouth & gullet. I think you acheived your aim, but neck area could go a little sharper.

I like the open beak pose and the way the backlight highlights the red throat. It does look a tad soft.

Very nice Alfred. I dont mind the narrow DOF, but the dark spot on the neck grabs my attention a bit to much because of it's sharpness.

Hi Alfred, I like the pose and the back lighting works well for showing of the red area. For me, I prefer to see the head/eye area lit as I feel in this case it overpowers what you were trying to do to show off the red. Does that make any sense, or do I just need a coffee?

There are many things I like about this image. 1) It is different! A big plus for creativity here. 2) The shiny gleam on the beak, very nice bonus. 3) the warm pink really shows off the gullet. 4) The top of the head has a shadow line, not harsh but OK. 5) The underside of the neck is softly lit and well defined. It gives the viewer the feeling of downy softness. 6) He is looking right at you. This should keep the head angle police at bay.

There is only a couple of things I don't like about this one. 1) The eye socket is somewhat shaded. 2) It isn't my image!

I love this one Alfred. Well done on being creative and exploring different ways to present a commonly photographed species.
