another from boynton inlet a couple weeks ago. i had intentions of cleaning up the specular highlights on the lower left, but after i started working on them i decided to let them be. what think you? not much PP. if it's not full frame it's close.

    D300, 300mm at f/7.1, 1/1250s, ISO 400, manual exp.

thanks for looking. comments and critiques much appreciated.

Hi Harold, I have mixed feelings regarding the highlights in the lower left hand corner, part of me likes them because the birds face is pointing right at them but the other part of me feels like it's a distraction. I guess that's not a clear answer, just more of my thoughts.

Nice and sharp. Wish for a little more of a head turn and also the highlights that Kurtis mentioned do distract when you first look at the image. However the rest of the BG is very pleasing.

Hi Harold Not sure if it would work but going over the bg with a soft brush might do the trick? Have not tried it !!! Great looking ruddy !!!

    G'day Harold,
Very nice subject, nicely exposed, I tend to find I over expose these birds very easily, especially the whites and when they start to get some breeding plummage on them.

If getting rid of the specular hightlights might be too problematic, a recrop could sort the issue.. I've also adjusted the SH slightly to lighten the image a little.
I know the crop I've done now has totally changed the composition you may have been looking for, but I think this way it puts a little more emphasis on the bird whilst keeping a little of the habitat in the image.

thanks, mark!! that's the exact crop that i went to after i gave up trying to fix the bg. then i decided to go back to the original. i was working on in camera composition that day and was hoping it worked as it was. i'm going to go back to the original and give al's suggestion a try. thanks again!!

I agree the highlights are distracting. But I think the smaller crop is too tight. ! wonder about adding a little contrast to the bird
