Taken this morning at one of two nests I have been observing.
    Sony A230, Sony 70-400G@400mm, HH, f5.6, 1/4000, iso400, ec-0.3
PP in Elements 8, 60% of FF, lightened shadows, slight saturation and contrast boost, USM, NR on BG.
(At least I got the HA this time?)

Hi Peter - love the HA and the open beak pose.
Looks a little flat, a little soft and a little noisy - noise under the wings will be form lightening the shadows - need to get the exposure pretty close to avoid having the lighten the shadows.
Seems to be a overall lack of fine detail - I know you said NR on the BG only???

EV was at -0.3 and i think it should have been around +1.0. would have been a BIG difference. agree with you. i love the HA and the calling. you bang the exposure and you got a big time keeper!!

    Hi Peter

Fine pose and dramatic !!! Love it !!

Just the exposure, a normal reading is plus one as Harold mentions and for a dark bird even more, only trick is having light that is not harsh enough to burn the head !!! Lots of times we sacrifice whites in order to obtain shadow detail !!

    Lance, Harold, Alfred,
Thanks for your comments and continued patience. I think I eventually will put it all together in one image:)

Hi Peter I sure wish I had that one just as is !!!!!

For exposing on the sky remember you are shooting the shaded side of the bird !!!
