Default Nikon TC20E III Test Image

    Attached Images Attached Images

    Nikon D300
    Nikon 600mm F4 ED AF-S
    Nikon TC20E III
    Gitzo 1400 with Mongoose 3.5a

I picked an image I thought was pretty gross to judge the subjective sharpness of this lens/TC converter combo.

ISO 800 with no noise reduction.
    1/640ss F14
No VR/IS, mirror lockup or cable release.
Normal post shutter workflow. Levels and USM

Not scientific, just a real world subjective test.

Looks good to me, mine is in the mail:)
One thing to note is that this was done with the D300.
FX body may produce different (even better) results from what
    I read so far.

Moose Peterson also seems to like the new 2x. See here his posts and videos about tele converters:

I received one and love the results. I use it on a D300 with Nikon 200mm f2 so a 400mm f4. AF is still fast and can tell difference in contrast through viewfinder when compared to my TCe 1.7
Here is one of the first shots I took with it.

Any thoughts on how image quality compares with the current nikon 1.7 tc?

Is autofocus possible with the VR 600MM F/4 lens?

Nikon's site says it is not.

    Interested in your comment, Ilija,
I am waiting for my 2xIII, but have been trying other lenses with my D700, and find that images are consistently sharper with the D700 versus the D300. Any ideas why? 100% crops with the D700 have sharpness comparable to the D300 (same image size)

I don't really know. My comment was based 100% from what I read
on various forums and test people have done.

The main difference between DX and FX is the noise level.
I could imagine that higher noise level would diffuse a straight
line a bit to make it bit less sharp. Especially if post-processing
of the original signal includes noise reduction, be it in the camera or not.
Any noise reduction inevitably smooths sharp edges.
Not sure about this, just a theory:)
