Hi Valerie - like the action - although it does take a little looking to see it.
Image looks a little soft - your shutter speed is a little slow for the focal length you were shooting at - general rule of thumb is to be at 1 over your focal length as a minimum so here 1/400TH to ensure sharp images.
The whites of the neck look to be over exposed - no detail - the histogram shows that they are indeed.
I would turn on your over exposure warning in the camera and check your histogram as you take the shots.
If you dont have Arties book on CD " The art of Bird Photography II" it will be of great help and is not expensive.

Quite like the overall scene - would crop some from the bottom and LHS to move it out of the middle.
Looking forward to seeing more :)

Thank you very much Lance. I agree with you about it being soft. It lacks feather detail. It was taken a few years ago and I am hoping my wildlife skills have improved a bit. Will certainly look into the book.

Looks to me like this was shot in matrix metering or whatever Canon calls it. The camera did it's best to properly expose the scene and it the process seems to have blown the white areas of the bird.

The moment is pretty good though, you don't often see these birds catch mammals.

    Hi Valerie

Lance is right on with his comments and fully agree !!!

I did not see your exposure mode but if you were in Av remember that with a dark bg you will need to compensate taking light away, here close to one stop !!!
