The composition would be more stronger if the head of the bird was not dead centered. I also wish for no shadow in the face, perhaps by waiting for the head turn would eliminate the shadows.
Hi Noel
The open beak is a lovely bonus in this image and I like the eye contact but do agree with Maxis on the lighting . He made some good suggestions to strengthen this image. Many thanks for sharing.
You did really well Noel! Caught at a nice moment and a nice sharp image as well. Agree on the lighting, one other thing that may have helped here would be some light fill flash.
The centering of his head bothers me too. At the time, the urge to leave some "face room" fought in me with the desire to put his eye in the rule of thirds position. They kind of averaged out. :)
I fully understand what several of you are saying about fill flash, but frankly I've never liked fill flash. I think I need to browse more of the most excellent images here to see if I can change my thinking on this.
Hey Noel, it's great to see you here! I love the lighting in this image...very natural, moody, and "Call of the Limpkin". I agree that there are several compositional options here, and I think I would side with the crowd that would see the head moved to the left, thereby providing more room on the right and a less centered composition. Hope to see you around more.
