    Default Pileated WP

I spend a lot of time on two local trails where this species is common hoping to get a clear shot. This guy was in my backyard this morning...
Sony A230, 70-400G, f5.6, 1/800, iso800, ec +0.07, hand held against a wall PP in elements 8, adjusted light, sharpened bird and perch, blurred BG, cloned out OOF branches spearing chest and bill. Cropped to portrait, 60% of FF I know its a big perch but it is a Pileated WP after all...

Love the species, saw two last week. You know the HA police will be looking for you :). Peter, was this a little underexposed, not sure looks like mixed light. Anyway, what a great find (in your backyard) thanks for sharing.

Hi Peter - Jeff is correct - The HA police will have to issue you a infraction notice :)
Hope you get some more chances with this guy - is a gorgeous looking bird.

Nice picture hard creatures to find. As for the perch the bird is creating a hole in the tree so it is completely natural

yep, you are gonna need some bail money for the HA police!!:) love these birds! you may back down on the saturation of the reds a little also. tends to be overblown by all DSLRs.

Peter, I love the Pileateds! They are so exciting to see-but usually don't give you much time to get the shot since they are so shy.:)
