    Default Loon shot

Hi everyone. I am brand new to this forum. I haven't shot alot of wildlife and want to improve on my nature shots such as birds and other wildlife. Here is a loon I shot a couple of years ago. My equipment: Canon 20D, lens-100-400 mm. Exif info: focal length-400 mm, f/7.1, ISO-200, shutter speed-1/400" Please feel free to comment and critique. Thanks

Your link isn't working for me. Please post the image directly on this site so we can see it.

I am not sure how to do that. I could not find where it gave clear instructions on how to post an image. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

    Valerie:

At the top of the forum, about 1" down on the far left, is a tab that says new thread. I think you found that already. when you click that, the dialog box comes up, and below there is a tab for managing an attachment.

When you click that, it gives you a chance to upload the file. It must be jpeg, less than 200kb, max size is 1024 W by 800H. After you have uploaded it, you have a chance to preview it before submitting, if you want to be sure it looks OK.

I have to head off to bed, but if it doesn't work for you, you could PM Axel or Alfred, both moderators who might still be up. You can do that by clicking on their name in the list of moderators (Axel is in Avian, Alfred in ETL and wildlife I think). A drop down menu will give you the option of sending them a PM.

Keep after it. Will look forward to your post. will check in the AM to make sure it worked!

Here is a link with detailed instructions on how to post. That should do it! I didn't catch that you were a participant, and not a member, so you will in fact have to link to this site, as you tired. Try to follow the instructions below.

    Valerie.

    Well exposed,nice sheen on neck.
Grasses in front do distract a bit.
Head is turned a bit away
Bit more space on the left would be nice

Sorry for the poor typing, on my Droid.

    Cheers

HI Valerie....I like this image because it shows the loonin its habitat. I also Like the low angle that makes it more intimate. The grasses in the foreground are handled well as you made sure the eye was clear. I do agree that you need to leave more room in front of the bird ....Space to look into. Looking forward to your next post!

Hi Valerie. Welcome! I like this a lot - it has a nice feel to it, which is helped by the habitat. I don't mind the grasses, except for the one that crosses his bill near the tip which is too bad. If you were so inclined it wouldn't be impossible to remove that one. Exposure looks good, and I like the sharp eye and colors. Agree he could use some room to the left. Well done in any event.

Nice one and welcome, good low angle and great eye. Agree it is too tight but I like the aperature setting with that lens and the shutter and ISO are fine - nice exposure techs. What a great find - thanks for sharing and looking forward to more from you.

Big Warm Welcome Valerie First is the most difficult to upload !!!

Agree with comments and would suggest more room around the bird, normally we don't like filling the frame more than 80 % (not a set rule by any means) You did come up with a good exposure on a tough bird, seeing the eye clearly is important ... looks good !!!!

btw there are ways to produce a little more detail in the whites, can be at the time of conversion or after. Look around the tutorial depository area !!!

Here is the uncropped version with slight tweaking in Lightroom. Slight sharpening and removed that grass strand at the end of his beak. How does it look now?

The extra room and removing the blade of grass really help. Nicely done! Wish I had this in my files.
