I tried several combinations of settings and settled on this one. Bright late afternoon sunlight combined with the flight speed and acrobatic maneuvers of this tern was definitely a learning experience for me as a newbie.

    Hey Ken, greetings :)
I know how difficult these birds can be, so catching one in the frame is an accomplishment.
Having that shutter speed is critical and I'd say the absolute minimum for flight until you are more experienced.
I'd go for ISO 400 and use f/4 for more DOF. Although it seems like you could have used ore light.
Unfortunately the bird does not seems sharp and the eye gets lost in the face band.
So, keep at it, and see in the field soon I hope :)

Definitely a tough subject. I like that you captured it on the bank to get better lighting and the comp works well too. Are you using continuous focusing?
