Default Having his way (he thinks)

Another B&W from the Maasai Mara last December. Bila Shaka pride. Despite all his spraying and shouting, the female was very much in charge of proceedings.

    Sony A700 70-400G @300mm f/5.6 1/320s ISO 640

I cropped the top and right of this to cut out the background and position the male where I wanted him. The background was bushes and distracting, even though I had them OOF. I converted to B&W because I want to put all the attention on the lions, and I used selective darkening and (a very little) lightening for the same reason. Cloned out a few flies as they were OOF, but left a few because I don't think complete sanitisation benefits the pic. I did a conversion with heavier contrast too, but I think it is too comic-book like.

Edit: Changed to a larger image.

Good sharp detail Paul, and the tight crop emphasises the action. When in Africa, you will always have a busy BG, so dont feel bad about trying to get rid of BG's. ;)

The difference in the expressions on their faces makes this one for me Paul, very cool.:)

I like the b/w conversion. Would like to see her paws but realize you are tightening the crop to eliminate distractions. Well done. TFS
BTW you can post @ 800 pixels for verts, makes it nicer for viewing.

I really like the conversion tones and the expression is just killer. Always great to get a sighting like this close up.

Great composition Paul with the contrasting emotions well portrayed. Would like to see also in colour.

    Me too!!!

You always get great facial expressions, but this female looks a little underwhelmed!

Thanks to all. I will post a colour version later, but have to start from the beginning as I converted for B&W from the RAW, so the colour version I have is a bit off. It should look all right in colour with his crop, and I'd certainly be interested to see what people think.

Yes, I really wanted to see them too! But not having them is actually the key to getting the comp right on this - I have one in the same series "with paws" for comparison.

    Hi Paul,

The contrasting facial expressions say it all. Excellent. I like the B&W version as it focusses the viewer on the subject more so than the environment. Lets see if I change my mind when you post the colour version.

I like the contrast of expressions here. Personal choice to lighten the right side of the male just a bit to more closely match the BG on his left.
