    Default Stone Spirit

Those of you who know my work know that I value things that are 'different'... that sometimes leads to images that work for some, and not at all for others. Here's one from Colorado last summer, I'm curious to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

    Hi Floris,
I love this. The bird is positioned perfectly in the frame and I love the textures and colours in the rock. A very dramatic image - I bet that this would look awesome as a large print.

This image works for me and I like your title. I also agree with Nicki's comments (composition, and the textures are pleasing). Th one thing I catch myself wondering about is since the bird is small in frame and lacking fine detail would presenting it as a silhouette enhance the "spirit" mood of the image. Just a thought as I do like it is as presented.

When I first saw the thumbnail Floris I thought it was a picture of a peregrine falcon or something similar, whose shadow was being cast upon the rock face. After opening it I was not sure what I was seeing. I guess I know that the bird is flying down in front of the rock, but I can't help but also see a dead bird lying prostrate on a flat rock from an aerial perspective. That image in my mind has no appeal. I think the idea is a good one but this rendition has too much ambiguity in that I can't tell what the picture is about. I think if perhaps you actually did have the birds shadow following him on the rock face under him, or just a shadow itself, everything would be clear.

Different and I like it, I understand is the type of image that would have very little in between form like to don't like !! Bird or shadow ... neat !!!

I like it. It reminds me of a pictograph one might see on a rocky outcrop along the BC coast. I really like the simplicity of it and how the crow stand out against the hard rock.

Great to see you posted here Floris! While I do like this image, Paul brings up some great points. After reading his comments, there is a definite ambiguity to the image which I'm sure translates into the like / dislike category for most. I think a shadow would clear that up. The position of the bird in the comp is spot on as is the contrast with the bird and the rocks. Looking forward to seeing more of your images on BPN!

    Thanks folks for your thoughts!

For me, the ambiguity (ie. lack of shadow, which by the way, is hidden behind a rock outcropping) is what makes the image - it creates a strange mix of dynamic ands static feelings. A pictograph is exactly the effect I was going for, thanks Dave!

Floris, works for me. Different and awesome. Parallel lines creating a very strong comp.
