    Default Nikon 400 w/2.0x

I'm in the process of switching back to Nikon and am looking to pick up a 400 2.8 non VR AF-s (see my offer of a trade for my 500 IS in buy/sell if interested). I'm wondering how it works with the various Nikon TCs. Anyone have any experience with this combo?

Also . . . I recently read some posts by a semi-well known nature photographer on another forum who made some some pretty silly comments about IQ while using TCs. So if possible, I'd love to see a NEF if possible. I'll be eternally indebted to anyone who can help me out.

    John,
I owned the 400/2.8 AFS IIand used it pretty extensivly with the TC-1.4E on both D3 and D300 bodies.I was pretty happy with the results., very little to no degradation with the 1.4. I've since sold it and bought a 300/2.8 VR and also picked up the 1.7x but havn't had time to test it out.
I'm looking at going the other way to Canon at the moment.

I use the AFS 400 2.8 (non vr) with D300, D200 and D2h with and without tc's. Am happy with the results. In the wildlife forum you can see samples, http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...ad.php?t=57632, http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...ad.php?t=58069, http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...ad.php?t=57350. These are shot w/d300, lens bare and w/1.4 and 2x tc's. Hope it helps. Note: these are Tamron sp tc's (same as kenko).

John your going to find lots of the performance with the converters has to do with technique and having enough shutter speed. The VR would perform better but with care you will do just fine !!!
