    Default Female Ladder-Backed Woodpecker on Cholla



    7D, 1.4x II, 500f4 L IS, f11, 1/250s, ISO 400, AWB, metering partial, fill flash -2.0, distance to subject 6.8m, full frame, 12:06pm. In the back yard out the open kitchen nook window. Vail, AZ, 2-24-10.

    I like the details on the face James, there seems to be some kind of dark halo around the back and a bright halo around the head, maybe it's just the BG... I wish there was a little more room on the left, and I really like the perch.

    Fantastic perch and the eye colour is a real focal point. Some separation between beak and perch would be nicer. I would move the whole perch/bird to the right in the frame if possible. Not sure what is causing the horizontal streaking the upper right BG. Dark areas look a bit noisy suggesting they have been opened up in post.

    Nice to see this species James. Great perch and pose. I would also like to see a bit more room on the left. I get the feeling there is a Shadows and Highlights effect here. If so maybe this could be toned down a bit.

    My first thought was that having pointed your gear left a bit more would have strenghtened the comp. I agree with the post-processing concerns of the previous posts, but this image already has a nice IQ that with a bit more TLC it should shine even more! Awesome perch and eye!!
