This image is from the recent Presidents day IPT Normally I would not keep this image since I have similar poses without the other birds and better in frame position .... but might be fun working on it, good exercise in several techniques ... want to give it a try . Image straight out of the camera just converted and posted to max size.

Looks great Kostas Excellent PS work I like how the legs came out clean after cloning the other bird out. Did you select the legs then cloned the bird?

For this one I was thinking of extending some canvas up front, more for to see what method would be used. Different ways of going about it !!! Neat !!

Might try for some selecting the part you don't want like the legs, select by color and feather or use the magic wand. Then when you invert the legs will not be involved in the cloning process !!!

Must be a million different ways, hoping to see other ideas ... lots of them using two layers and a layer mask !!!

Hi Al, Thought I would have fun with this one...Did it rather quickly but I reversed canvas, added room on the bottom, applied S/H to give it a bit more pop and contrast adj. Cloned out other birds.

Tried it last night but got stuck on the feet with the bird behind the feet. Lots of work to get the water looking good. Worked for a while and then packed it in:)

Kostas and Dave very nice results. I have a couple of questions regarding these adjustments.
-I am assuming Photoshop was used for these adjustments?
-Would you be able to estimate the skill level of a Photoshop user to be able to do something like this?
-How long would something like this typically take to do?
I ask because I keep thinking about getting Photoshop but change my mind since it's kind of expensive, especially if I don't end up using it. I tried the trial version once and was basically frustrated most of the time since it didn't seem very intuitive to me. Thank you for any feedback.

Al - here's my stab at it. This was done in PS Elements 7.0. Unfortunately Elements doesn't have quick masks, but I created bird and bg layers using the Quick Selection tool and Layer via Cut, before cloning out the other birds. I added canvas to the right (using rectangular marquis and stretch, followed by some cloning to take out some obvious stretch marks). Cropped top, bottom and left. Adjusted levels, contrast, selectively boosted saturation; Topaz NR on bg; sharpened bird in jpeg. I think this would have been better had I worked from the full-size file rather than the web jpeg; after making changes and saving back to web it seemed to lose some more image quality. And I haven't gotten the white balance the way I wanted it -- seems to be a bit of magenta cast. Anyway, I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks for posting this - it makes for an interesting exercise.

Hi Kurtis, Yes, PS was used to make the changes. I would say it took a medium skill level to do this. The big question is how much time are you prepared to spend on the program since it takes some practice using the tools and there are adjustment variations to many of them. There are also a number of different ways to come up with the same results.
If you are serious about getting proficient at using PS there are numerous books out there with tips(also alot of good ones on this site) and basics in using the program. Then it's up to you to play with it and actually experiment with the program. Books, practice and experimentation is how most folks learn...

    Hi Alfred
You must have spotted fine images lurking within your original image.
    Something that eluded me !!!
Congratulations to Kostas, Dave & Bill for showing what can be done.
    Cheers: Ian Mc

I think the cloning is great on the reposts. I make a quick selection of the bird I want to keep (at least the lower half in this case), make this a layer. Then I make a copy of the bg layer and work on that. My problem is that my skill at cloning is bad. I don't get the natural results I see here.
Would someone care to elaborate on what they do to avoid circular affects and other bad looking pieces when I clone.

Allen use a softer brush and you won't get the hard edges...

Hi Kurtis There are ways for getting PS at a lower price, one is with a student ID .. lots of people that are not in school register for a night course for the benefits. Can also get just about any other at a great price.

For processing images it is a must, could use Photo Element but not the same. With a little work you will be able to get around the program and then learning more becomes easier ... its a big deal once you get there !!!

Hey Alfred, thank you for the tips and the input. Looking at the examples above have definitely rekindled my interest in it.
