Default First Post - Burrowing Owl

Canon 7D, 400mm, f/8, 1/500, iso 400, tripod, taken at Cape Coral, Florida behind the library. I had to clone out quite a bit of grass and distracting shadows on the owl's face and then adjusted exposure on it's left eye, which was in the shadows. Processed in Lightroom. First post here and very eager for critiques.

    Welcome to BPN Mike!
Very nice first pose congrats. love the eye contact and details here. I am ok with the three OOF strands in FG but their shadow on the chest area is a bit distracting. would also sharpen the chest area a bit more.

Thanks for the feedback.....I'm going to do some more work on it. My new 7D is killing my old computer when it comes to editing, so this should take a while! lol

Hi Mike - a big warm welcome to the BPN Family - I like your first post.
Dont be shy - jump right in and start to comment on the peoples posts - all we ask is that you say why you like or dont like a image (Great shot without supporting commentary on why it is a great shot - is not very helpful to others) also the best way to learn yourself!!
A little more sharpening to the chest as mentioned - might also try and lighten up the shadow side of the owl just a little.
Love the eyes. the grass does not bother me too much - shows the habitat and ads to the story - IMHO.
looking forward to seeing more :)

    Big Warm Welcome Mike !!!

Fine looking owl I like the different crop and overall feel, don't mind the shadows much since sort of adds to the mood. Would select the right side of face (and eye) to lighten a bit, even out with the other side. Should not be difficult.

With these you can make good use of fill flash and the bird do not react !! Besides filling in will give you a nice catchlight to brighten the eye, can clone the tiny catchlight on the left eye and transfer tot he right ... makes the eye look alive!!

btw lots of birds by the Government Center area !!! Looking forward to the next one !!!

Thanks for the help and warm welcomes. I hadn't even thought about cloning the catch light over to the other eye. Lots to learn, which is part of the fun!
